Visit the Gondwana Rainforest of Australia and tick off a world heritage site from your forever growing bucket list. Just a 40 minute drive from the ‘Promised land retreat’ is Dorrigo National Park, whether you opt for a flying visit or plan to make a day of it, it is definitely worth seeing.
If you only have a short amount of time you can experience the skywalk, a 70 metre elevated walkway which hangs over the dense forest canopy. From the very edge, behold the spectacular rolling hills of Bellingen valley and to the horizon set your eyes on the coast.
If you’re feeling a little more active and want to experience the prehistoric and enchanting rainforest then make sure you take the 6km loop from the ‘Dorrigo Rainforest Centre’ to Crystal shower falls. Walk over the suspension bridge to see the falls from up high or if you want to be really daring you can even walk behind the falls and see it from a different perspective. You can also enjoy the refreshing mist of the falls on a hot and humid day. It’s not often you get walk behind a waterfall now is it…
Within the park you can find 600 year old trees amongst other weird and wonderful plant species. You will find plenty of information on the trails so you can learn along the way. For the bird lovers, there are over 120 species of birds native to Dorrigo National park, so plenty to see… and hear. If you are really lucky you may be able to witness the rare and spectacular performance of the ‘Superb Lyrebird’. The male secures a territory in the hopes of attracting a potential mate and then performs an amazing song. He mimics a huge range of sounds, mainly other native bird calls but they have even been heard to copy the sound of a chainsaw, car alarm or a camera shutter.
The park has all the facilities you need for a day. The visitor centre has a shop, an award winning cafe and clean toilets. Close by the centre is the ‘Glade Picnic Area’ with covered picnic tables equipped with powered BBQs, the perfect spot to kick back relax and enjoy a picnic with the family.
It is also worth while taking in the views at ‘Griffith’s look out’, just as you arrive at the top of Dorrigo pass, take the mountain top road to the left and follow the signs to arrive at your destination. A further 2km from Dorrigo town centre you will find yourself at Danger Falls.
